Understand forge welding
Joining, shaping, and hardening are different operations with different conditions.
Create a joint, not a pool of liquid steel.
Surface oxides interfere with joining. Flux-assisted routes use a suitable flux to manage oxides and protect contact surfaces; fluxless routes depend on controlled interfaces and oxygen conditions. High-chromium oxides present different challenges from ordinary low-alloy steel, so a familiar borax route is not universal. [9] [34]
| Stage | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Heat and protect | Has the actual stack heated through under the chosen process? Flux appearance alone is not a temperature measurement. |
| Establish the initial joint | Does the pressure arrangement suit the equipment and stack, without excessive sliding before joining is established? |
| Reheat and complete | Are the interfaces joining, with appropriate paths for flux, oxides, and gaps to be displaced? |
| Clean and retain a sample | What do the cleaned surfaces and sample sections reveal? An apparently closed exterior is only preliminary evidence. |
This sequence summarizes workshop teaching. It does not specify universal press tonnage, strike count, temperature, or holding time. [3] [26]
Why temperatures seem to disagree.
Forge-welding references, ordinary forging references, and final hardening references describe different stages. Higher temperature or a longer hold can increase oxidation, decarburization, and structural problems; some high-carbon materials can fail through overheating. Do not combine values from different stages into a single schedule. Read the material, equipment, and starting-condition context of each source. [8] [9]
Decide whether the billet is ready.
After cooling and cleaning, examine sides and retained sections. Dark seams along interfaces, separation, and inclusions need investigation before further product work. A defect is not a decorative line, and a favorable result from one mechanical test does not make it acceptable. [15]
For a first physical trial, use a small stack and a workshop-validated material and equipment route. Change one variable at a time. Do not improvise sealed hot packages containing unknown liquids or volatile substances.
