Canister, san-mai & industrial routes
A consolidation method, a composite structure, and a pattern category describe different things.
Canister: joining filler and closing voids.
Workshop canister forging arranges known materials and suitable metal powders in a container, then uses heat and pressure to consolidate them. A hot exterior does not prove through-heating or complete joining inside. Packing, voids, section size, pressure directions, and equipment all influence the result. [27]
- Choose traceable filler and powder, and follow a validated workshop packing and containment route.
- Establish suitable through-heating and deformation rather than judging only the can’s exterior.
- Remove the can as appropriate to the route, retain samples, and inspect internal consolidation before further work.
A reported “50% reduction” might refer to a side length, cross-sectional area, or another quantity. Clarify its definition and the author’s equipment and package conditions before comparing accounts. [27] [28]
San-mai: distinguish core and cladding.
A common three-layer composite has a central core and two outer claddings. The cladding can itself be pattern-welded steel, while a plain core appears at the edge. Keep the core position and two-sided heating and deformation under observation. Excessive grinding from one side can change exposed core width or remove the intended cladding. [29] [30]
Core and cladding must still be compatible in joining, heat treatment, thermal expansion, and processing. Stainless cladding does not automatically share a 1084 / 15N20 schedule. Layer thicknesses and final bevel geometry require an intended use and verification plan.
Industrial HIP is a different pressure environment.
Damasteel describes powder production, encapsulation, hot isostatic pressing, and subsequent forging, rolling, or patterning. Gas pressure acting around a package differs from contact loading by a workshop press. Read the technical sheet for the purchased grade rather than treating all powder routes as one canister recipe.
