Grinding, etching & care
Reveal the existing structure while preserving the material and the intended use.
Prepare the surface before asking it to show detail.
Remove earlier deep scratches progressively instead of expecting etching to conceal them. Use stable support and controlled grinding, recording the display face and removed thickness. Manage local heat during post-hardening work, especially around thin regions. The finishing sequence depends on material and desired result; one grit number is not universal. [35]
Read the actual product’s TDS and SDS.
Ferric chloride products differ in concentration, acidity, and supplied condition. A forum ratio such as “1:3” is incomplete without identifying the concentrate, water, concentration, and units. MG Chemicals 415 provides an example of a ready-to-use product; it is not evidence that every ferric chloride solution should follow one dilution ratio. Consult the current technical and safety sheets for the purchased product and region. [36] [37] [38] [55]
- Use a matching sample. Match material, heat treatment, and surface condition as closely as possible. Record product, batch, supplied concentration, temperature, and observed timing.
- Clean consistently. Follow an appropriate degreasing and cleaning route; avoid recontaminating the working surface.
- Test under controlled conditions. Use compatible containers, appropriate chemical splash protection, and a managed work area, following the product instructions.
- Observe before continuing. Assess contrast, relief, and detail between stages. Cycle count is not a quality score.
- Stop and clean appropriately. Follow the applicable termination and cleaning method, keeping the cleaning area separate from active etchant. Dry fully and select protection suited to the intended use.
This is a process-management framework, not a dilution, contact-time, or neutralization recipe. Different makers’ short-cycle and deep-etch practices should not be combined without validation. [35]
Connect the safety sheet to the work area.
Use the container materials specified by the supplier. Do not mix in other acids, cleaners, or unidentified liquids. Collect and label spent metal-containing etchant for appropriate disposal; appearance or a claim of “neutralized” does not establish that discharge is allowed. [37] [38]
The 415 safety sheet describes possible flammable hydrogen release in contact with metals. Provide appropriate ventilation, control ignition sources, and avoid ongoing metal/etchant reactions in confined containers. Select gloves by chemical compatibility and breakthrough data, together with suitable eye and face protection and cleaning facilities. [55]
A finished surface has a life beyond the photograph.
Deep relief can change friction and cleaning behavior. Balance contrast with use, corrosion protection, and maintenance. 1084 / 15N20 is not a stainless combination. Clean and dry after use, remove chemical residues thoroughly, and choose maintenance products appropriate to the purpose. A change in contrast does not mean the internal layers disappeared. [30]
